PRODUCTION
How is Smart Flex Pine Shaving Produced?
How Many Should I Use?
An average empty stable requires 4 to 6 bags of shavings to create the optimal bedding depth. Each 18 kg Smart Flex bag is compressed and contains a consistent amount of shavings that will cover approximately 2 to 3 square meters.
Embossing
Use a shavings fork to loosen and aerate compacted shavings, and spread them evenly.
DEPTH
Create an even bedding layer across the entire floor with a depth of 15–20 cm, but leave some space near the doorway to minimize spillage. This is important for your horse’s comfort and relaxation, and a deeper bed helps manage moisture more efficiently while requiring less frequent bedding changes.
Reserve
Some horse caretakers prefer to pile shavings about 30–45 cm high around the walls as a clean and dry shavings "reserve." Creating piles of shavings while cleaning manure will also help extend the bedding’s lifespan.
Maintenance of an Ideal Smart Flex Bedding…
*If possible, horses should be removed from the stable and their manure cleaned.
*Manure should be removed as quickly as possible using a fork.
*Shake the fork lightly so that clean shavings return to the surface, preventing waste.
*After cleaning the floor, loosen the bedding surface with a shavings fork.
*Every two to three days, pile the loosened surface shavings onto the side banks, clean areas where wet shavings have accumulated, and return the banks to the main bedding area.
*Add fresh shavings to maintain optimal depth. Most customers report using 1–1.5 bags of shavings per week, depending on their horses’ “stall-cleaning habits.”
The Power of Pine
Using pine shavings in the stable is very important for horse health and comfort.
Shavings absorb urine and moisture, keeping the floor dry. This reduces unpleasant odors and prevents the growth of microorganisms. Pine shavings act as a natural insulation, protecting the horses’ hooves from the cold. Their soft texture allows horses to lie down comfortably and prevents injuries.
Additionally, pine has antiseptic properties that reduce the risk of infections.
Its scent repels insects, it is easy to clean, and environmentally friendly.
In short, pine shavings are indispensable in the stable.
Respiratory Health
Eliminating dust and spores in the stable has always been our number one priority.
We started producing Smart Flex shavings in 2022 in response to the demand from leading race trainers in Turkey for a natural bedding alternative with minimal dust instead of straw. Research in equine veterinary medicine over the past 25 years has confirmed that airborne dust in stables increases the risk of respiratory diseases, and our determination to eliminate dust has made our shavings the first choice for all owners in the equestrian world. Dust and spores in the air can trigger a wide range of reactions in the respiratory system, from temporary mild irritation causing limited inflammation in tissues and mucus production to RAO (COPD), which can cause permanent damage to the respiratory system and even end a horse’s career or life.
